TRACE RESEARCH ADVANCED CLEAN ENVIRONMENT FACILITY
TRACE is a unique infrastructure enabling research requiring a high-purity contamination free environment. A vector of excellence at Curtin University, TRACE is operated under the JdLC. Use of the facility spans disciplines, departments, schools, and institutions.


THE INFRASTRUCTURE IS KEY TO CURTIN RESEARCH INTO CLIMATE AND POLLUTION EVOLUTION, ANCIENT DNA RESEARCH, BIO-SECURITY AND HEALTH, MINERAL DATING AND RESOURCE EXTRACTION AND NANOPARTICLES IN THE ATMOSPHERE AND OCEANS.

TRACE FACILITY 1/5

The TRACE Facility is a purpose-built, clean air environment designed for measuring extremely low concentrations of chemical species, including DNA.

TRACE FACILITY 2/5

The laboratory consists of a large, clean containment area (Class 100), provided with air that has been passed through three stages of particulate filtration. The containment space houses five individual laboratory modules that provide an additional level of air filtration (Class 10) ultrapure water and separation of activities.

TRACE FACILITY 3/5

Laboratory modules include a HR-ICPMS module, a small geologic samples module, two Trace and Environmental DNA (TrEnD) modules and an ice core module.

TRACE FACILITY 4/5

The design is focused on preventing contamination of samples and high purity reagents.

TRACE FACILITY 5/5

Under the Australian Department of Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) the facility is charged with regulating the import of quarantined materials.

HR-ICPMS

Facility Instrumentation is housed in the exclusion space and includes a HR-ICPMS (Thermofisher Elment XR with jet interface and seafast II autosampler), a single particle intracavity laser induced incandescence soot photometer (SP2, droplet measurement technologies), a field flow fractionation system (FFF, Postnova) and a custom built continuous ice core analysis system (CFA-ice core).
